Giving back to the community is an integral part of our Core Values. That’s why we consider it a privilege to volunteer at Camp Smitty every fall.
The pandemic prevented us from volunteering in 2020 so we were especially eager to get back to work this past September.
Creating positive experiences in nature
Camp Smitty, which is operated by BGC Ottawa, is an initiative that ensures that every child has a positive camp experience. It provides a unique opportunity for youth to enjoy a memorable summer in nature, regardless of their financial situation.
One of the primary objectives of Camp Smitty is to create a safe and fun camp environment. That’s where we come in. For 15 years, Amsted and our partners have been helping upgrade the camp’s infrastructure.
Thanks to the hard work of hundreds of volunteers and staff over the years, Camp Smitty is now considered one of the premier summer camps in Ontario!
Working together for a good cause
This year, despite COVID challenges, we were able to gather a group of 50 volunteers including our staff and their families. It was inspiring to see everyone working together for a worthwhile cause.
Our main project was replacing four cabin roofs with $10,000 worth of steel roofing material donated by Ideal Roofing. It was a big job, but we were able to complete it in just one day.
Our team also helped improve the grounds by chopping down trees, clearing brush, splitting logs and stacking wood for campfires at the amphitheatre. The camp’s rental cabin got a bit of love too; we made it safer for guests by installing ice and water shield on the roof.
A memorable weekend for all
After a full day of hard work, we still managed to make time to enjoy team building activities such as an egg toss and Camp Smitty’s Got Talent show. We rounded out the day with a delicious dinner prepared by the Camp Smitty staff and a spectacular fireworks display.
It was truly a weekend to remember. We hope that our efforts will help provide camp goers with beautiful memories for many years to come.
