This week’s Meet the Finalist instalment is particularly exciting because this is a project you can come and tour this Sunday, October 6th! Our entry for Reno Tour 2019 is our newest Living Room Presentation Centre and the apartment that’s upstairs. The powder room in this home is also a finalist in the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association Housing Design Awards this month!
Reno Tour is an annual tour of renovated homes that showcases recent work by several of Ottawa’s RenoMark members. It’s also a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa. We have been proud to take part since its introduction.
We chose this project to feature on the tour partly because we’re proud of the work our team has done in designing and restoring this older home in the Glebe and partly because of the possibilities it offers to homeowners.
The home had seen several renovations over the years that continually moved away from the historical character of the home and neighbourhood. When we decided it would make the perfect location for our “show home” and meeting centre in the Glebe, we knew we would need to return this fine home to its former glory.
That meant adding tray ceilings and a window bench, restoring wall panelling and trim, and replacing windows. We also rounded out the renovation by adding modern touches such as white barn doors, herringbone-patterned tile, a waterfall granite counter and a bold powder room.
It’s that powder room that is up for an award this month at the Housing Design Awards. It was relocated during the renovation for more convenient access and given a serious boost of oomph with dramatic wallpaper and design details like integrating the light switch into the wallpaper for a seamless transition.
Upstairs, the two upper floors have been given an overhaul to create a comfortable rental suite. We were able to repurpose cabinetry from the old main-floor kitchen and thoroughly modernize all spaces. As this unit is rented, it’s not usually available for viewing, but will be on tour day.
It’s also a great example of how homeowners with roomy homes like this who want to stay in their family home, even though the kids may be gone and they no longer need all that space, can repurpose some of that space to create their own rental suite that will earn them a passive income.
