Kitchen and bathroom renos are among the most popular projects homeowners undertake. What’s not as common is a renovation that includes a full-service upgrade to a vintage car lover’s garage. We’ve written about part of this project before, but now we’re sharing all of it with you as a finalist for two renovation awards, one locally and one provincially!
This whole home renovation features a new open-concept kitchen and living room, updated dining room, redesigned bathrooms and a fully finished car-lover’s garage. It’s nominated for renovation up to $250,000 in the Ontario Home Builders’ Association Awards of Distinction later this month and for renovation $200,001 – $350,000 in the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association Housing Design Awards in October.
The homeowners were seeking a unified space for their everyday use. Removing a dividing wall allowed for the expansion of the kitchen and an open-concept living area, while also maintaining a separate dining room for entertaining. Meanwhile, finishing the garage creates a more usable, enjoyable place for working on their vintage cars.
The entire redesign was made within the existing footprint of the home, while creating much better functionality for each room. Now the home is being used to its full potential, with every square inch accounted for.
The before and after photos are a great illustration of the transformation this home has undergone. Here are a few:
The kitchen has become the crown jewel of the home, designed in a light and airy style that welcomes entertaining. It features a stainless-steel hood fan with glass and steel hardware and pendant lights selected to match.
The addition of a peninsula provides extra seating and creates a comfortable atmosphere to both cook and relax.
A striking pop of colour in the dining room adds depth to their otherwise neutral home. As well, adding French pocket doors to keep an open doorway allows people to flow through the spaces comfortably.
Reorganizing the ensuite allowed for a separate water closet. The new space feels open, while still improving privacy.
Aesthetic updates to the main floor bathroom make the space feel fresh and new, and unify the space with the rest of the home.
Finishing the garage greatly enhances its usability, making it an enjoyable place for working on vintage cars. Of note, the epoxy floor was designed and built to slope away from the walls and towards the garage doors, enabling the owners to wash two cars at once, without water damage to structure.
